Wetlands Remediation and Restoration – Union Township, Union, NJ

JM Sorge, Inc. (JMS) was retained to remediate contaminated historic fill found within a wetland. The scope of work included delineating the wetlands and obtaining the necessary Land Use permit to conduct the remediation project. Wetland contaminants of concern included polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

JMS delineated the wetlands and State Open Waters based on observed hydric soil conditions, wetland vegetation and hydrology. The delineation was marked in the field and documented in a Letter of Interpretation Line Verification, which established the wetlands boundary and the resource value of the wetlands.

JMS also designed a mitigation plan for the remediation activities to be conducted in the wetlands. The workplan included excavation of impacted soil, dewatering, and off-site disposal of the soil. At the conclusion of the work, the wetland will be restored to original grade using clean topsoil and revegetated with native plants. The remediation plan was detailed in a General Permit 4 (GP-4) application to the NJ Department of Environmental Protection.

The NJDEP approved both the Letter of Interpretation and General Permit applications and coordination is underway to begin the remediation project.
