Environmental Mapping with ArcGIS

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is one of the primary mapping tools used by NJDEP and environmental professionals. GIS is an efficient way to analyze site-specific data and understand regional environmental issues. The NJDEP provides a variety of GIS datasets that are available as free downloads through the Bureau of Geographic Information Systems. If you can’t find the dataset you are looking for from the NJDEP Bureau of GIS, the Bureau also provides a list of additional resources, including county GIS departments, independent and non-profit organizations, and federal agencies. Additionally, the New Jersey Geographic Information Network (NJGIN) provides downloadable statewide data including aerial photography and parcel information that are helpful starting points for generating base maps.
